Four numbers worth watching

Disk space creeping up by a percent a week has a date on it, and you can work out when it runs out. Memory that never comes back down after an update usually means something is leaking. A machine that stays busy overnight, when nobody is visiting, is doing work you did not ask for. None of this is subtle once it is drawn as a line.

Answer "do we need a bigger server?" honestly

When a client asks, you can either say their processor peaks at a third of what they are already paying for, or show them a chart that says yes. Both are better than a guess, and the second one makes the case for you.

Alongside everything else that happened

The statistics, the uptime checks, the backups and the certificate renewals share the same timeline, so when something changed you can see what else changed at the same time.

Common questions

Do I need to install anything on the server?

No. The figures are collected over the connection WPShift already has to the server. There is nothing to install, keep updated or explain to anybody.

How far back can I look?

The charts show the last twenty-four hours by default, and the underlying measurements go back further, so a slow climb over a fortnight is visible rather than lost.

What should I actually be watching?

Disk space first: it is the one that takes a server down completely and the one that gives you the most warning. Then memory that never comes back down, then a machine that stays busy when traffic does not. Short bursts of processor use are usually the least interesting of the four.

Can I see which site is using the most?

Disk space and monthly traffic are recorded on each site. For processor and memory, each site runs under its own user account on the server, which makes it straightforward to attribute if you go and look.
